It’s month three of my post-graduation vacation slash unemployment, and I’m getting increasingly restless. But the good news is after two months of nothing, I’ve finally started on my freelance transcription job at the beginning of this week and attended an interview at a branding agency on Tuesday. Hopefully something comes out of it. Fingers crossed.
I’ve basically been spending my free time reading – Elliot Allagash wasn’t as hilarious as the reviews made it out to be, and my enjoyment of it was dulled a little when I found out that the author was not John Mulaney as I had originally thought. It was still highly entertaining though, and I finished it in one sitting / two hours or so. The first two books of the Divergent series were so good I can’t wait for the final installment of the trilogy. And of course, fanfiction. One should never forget fanfiction.
I’ve also been going on Youtube a lot for the past two months, and with one video leading to another I ended up… falling into waist-deep K-pop. Yep, my K-pop cherry was popped rather uneventfully by the previously attractively mustached G.O (Jung Byung Hee) and MBLAQ. This group of five is like, fifty percent dork on variety shows and fifty percent sex when they’re onstage, and they remind me a lot of KAT-TUN. Whose posters I still have on my wall, so it’s not like I abandoned them. I just… haven’t been keeping up since I’ve been in the dark side.
And so… I’ve dipped my toes in the pond of Korean.
And this language is hard as fuck.
Trust me, Japanese was ten times easier when I started learning it five years ago. But for as long as I am obsessed with MBLAQ, I will conquer Korean.
It’s so very ironic considering I used to irrationally hate all things Korean merely because of two wrongly called offside goals that cost Italy‘s advancement to the semi (? I no longer remember) finals during the Japan/Korea World Cup in 2002. I’ve been eating my hat every day since discovering MBLAQ approximately three weeks ago.
Aside from the massive change in dietary habits, I have also been eating a lot more cakes because I have been baking. A lot. So much that I’ve emptied a bottle of vanilla essence, a personal baking milestone. A whole lot more than I used to, because I have been extremely stressed out about my jobless state and when I’m stressed, I bake. In two months, I’ve perfected the brownie with just the right level of chewiness, mastered the New York baked cheesecake, butter cake, and banana cake, produced a chiffon cake without a bundt pan, and after a backbreaking afternoon in the kitchen making pastry creme and flipping crepes, the mille crepe.
That’s all the cakes I want to make, made. Not to mention I’ve perfected my crepe flip, highly cross-applicable to pancakes, omelettes, and even stir frys.
I’m inclined to start making bread next. Flatbread, focaccia, bagels, Hokkaido milk bread… mm.
